Prunus Laurocerasus Rotundifolia ( Cherry Laurel)

is tough, vigorous evergreen hedge plant with large, thick, glossy leaves that are effective at blocking light, muffling sound and slowing down wind that passes through it. This plant is excellent for dry, shady places with poor soil. It casts full shade and even chemically inhibits the growth of seeds in the soil underneath it, so weeds are unable to grow. Its flowers are attractive, rising little spires of white, scented blossom that attract bees and butterflies. The flowers mature into bitter, cherry like fruit, which are eaten by birds.
Every part of the plant is poisonous, apart from the flesh of the fruit. None of tastes nice, so children shouldn't want to eat any of it, but we don't recommend planting a cherry laurel hedge next to livestock. Cherry laurel is commonly planted as cover for game and wildlife.

Spacing a Cherry Laurel hedge:

Plant bareroot Cherry Laurel hedging at 2 plants per metre, 33-50cms apart.

Prunus Lusitanica (Portugal Laurel )

Like its close relative the cherry laurel, this species from Spain and Portugal is usually planted to make a large hedge, screen or windbreak. It is a very beautiful shrub in its own right though, eventually making a large shapely tree if allowed to grow naturally. The leaves are an attractive shade of green, reddish when young and on red stalks, while the white flowers in early summer smell sweetly of hawthorn. It is harder and more versatile even than cherry laurel, and withstands clipping into formal shapes.

Spacing a Portugal Laurel hedge:

Plant bareroot Cherry Laurel hedging at 2 plants per metre, 33-50cms apart.

Ilex aquifolium (Common holly)

is a versatile evergreen shrub with prickly, twisted, glossy dark green leaves that are instantly recognisable. It is a useful, slow growing variety which can be grown as a specimen tree or clipped bush with lovely, bright red berries from late autumn to mid-winter. Perfect for using as intruder-proof hedging for security and around boundaries, it has a dense growth habit and is not fussy about soil type of situation, thriving in dense shade as well as full sun. Hedges should be trimmed in spring and specimen shrubs in summer. It can be cut back drastically if necessary without harming the plant.

Spacing Ilex hedge:

Plant bareroot Ilex hedging plants at 2 plants per metre,
33-50cms apart.

Taxus Baccata(English Yew )Hedge

The classic British conifer hedging plant, called the King of Hedges. Yew is a dense, dark evergreen with bright green spring growth and autumnal red fruits which are much sought after by birds but harmful to humans, pets and livestock. It is often thought to be very slow growing but actually normally grows by 30/40cm pa so not as slow as many people think - but once it reaches its desired height, its easy to maintain. Yew hedging needs plenty of water in the first couple of seasons but should not sit in waterlogged soil. If you are concerned that you have clay, wet soil, please improve the drainage when planting Yew. Apart from its requirement for water, it's very easy to grow, shade tolerant, very hardy, and likes all soils particularly alkaline.

Western Red Cedar (Thuja Plicata Atrovirens)

Thuja Plicata Atrovirens is an evergreen conifer with red-brown flaking bark. It has a conical habit and dark-green, neat foliage that may become bronze-tinted in winter. It is slower growing than leylandii and makes a very good hedge.

Fast growing evergreen conifer with cinnamon-red shredding bark and spreading branches. Bright glossy green leaves above, slightly grey beneath, and aromatic when crushed. Best on moist but not waterlogged soil but will tolerate shallow chalk soil.

Chamaecyparis Columnaris Glauca _ 'Columnaris Glauca'

An evergreen, coniferous tree that grows in a column form, covered in blue-grey foliage, that is especially bright in summer. Evergreen with blue , silvery-gray foliage in all seasons. Can be used for hedging and screening or as a special specimen. Plant full sun to dappled shade for best effects, well draining soil. Ultimate height if untrimmed 10-15m x 60-90cm spread in 15 years.

Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana Stardust

This variety Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana (Lawson's Cyress) is a slow-growing, narrowly to broadly conical tree, with fern-like yellow foliage.

If the conifer produces more than one leader, to maintain the general conical habit remove all but one leader. To restrict the height of the plant, the leader can be cut back

Cupressocyparis Leylandii

are the fastest growing evergreen hedging available, providing essential security and privacy for gardens in cities, towns and villages. They are available in a variety of sizes from 60cm high to 6m plus tall in either gold or green colours. The green leylandii are slightly faster growing than the gold. Once established they require trimming once a year to ensure they keep their shape and maintain the height you require. Do not clip them too tightly. It is preferable to leave them looking slightly rustic otherwise they are prone to infestation of the Red Spider Mite. If this should happen there is a spray available to control this. All our leylandii are guaranteed and quality is assured when you buy from us

Rootball Heavy Standard Trees

Root-balled trees : November to April

All trees are lifted from the ground with the soil intact around the root system. On removal from the ground the root-ball is wrapped in biodegradable hessian and non-galvanised wire. The root-ball should be planted intact with the hessian and wire left on. Once planted the non-galvanised wire soon breaks down and the hessian will rot, allowing the root system to develop. The whole benefit of root-balling is that the root system remaining after lifting (you will lose about 35% of the root on a regularly transplanted tree) will not be disturbed during handling, transportation and planting.
